Wonderful Husband is all about critical thinking, logic and rationality. So you’d think that the new documentary, What The Health (WTH), based entirely on scientific evidence would interest him. Nope, he still hasn’t watched it.
I don’t want to reveal too much about the film (I can’t do it justice!) but the clue is in the name… It’s all about health. And food. The film begins with a quote
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
– Hippocrates
WTH talks about foods which are bad for our health and more importantly, it talks about why we eat food that is bad for our health: Advertisements and propaganda. Lies.
WTH goes on to point out the strong monetary links between some charities and pharmacutical companies with the meat and dairy industries. For example, one of the biggest causes of cancer is processed meat, yet the American Cancer Society (ACS) still encourages eating processed turkey and canned meats to sustain a healthy diet. This would seem strange but then we find out that Tyson (the world’s largest processor of meat) had made donations to ACS in previous years.
*Drops mic and walks off stage*
Soon after watching WTH, I posted in a Facebook vegan transitioning group, offering help to those that were transitioning. Lovely Brandy reached out to me. She said that after watching WTH, she had decided to go vegan.
Whilst talking about veganism with Brandy I got to learn about her. I found out that she and her brother suffered with diabetes and both her mum and dad had died from diabetic-related illnesses. She assumed she would have the same fate until WTH showed her that diet could be the problem.
The biggest shock was that up until five days before we spoke, Brandy had reared animals for the purpose of meat and eggs. WTH had made such a profound impression on Brandy that she decided she would no longer use animals for her own gain but instead use the land to grow fruit and vegetables.
This documentary is special.
We live in a world where we have a habit of getting sick, going to the doctor and then paying(!) for medicine which will either cure or maintain our ailment. This is the case from one extreme like the common cold all the way to the other extreme like diabetes or cancer. Sometimes getting sick is inevitable but why don’t we try harder to prevent sickness?
An apple a day keeps the doctor away… So why do very few people eat an apple a day?
As in Brandy’s case, this documentary can be life-changing. So do me a favour please, watch WTH and tell Wonderful Husband how good it is. If that doesn’t convince him then I don’t know what will.
You can find WTH on Netflix or via their website. Happy watching! 💚
********UPDATE********
Wonderful Husband and Best Friend Sam watched it with me today (23/07/17). They both found it very interesting and I’ll be updating you further if there are any ‘results’. Thank you to everyone for their support and comments for helping me achieve this goal!! 🙂
Sounds like he has a pretty bad case of confirmation bias (which runs rampant in the corpse muncher community).
His tendency to embrace information that supports his beliefs & showcases his willingness do damn near anything to reject any information that contradicts them.

Haha! Something we all suffer from… If I read an article telling me meat is unhealthy then I have no problem believing it, if there’s an article telling me meat is healthy then I’m checking the sources, the sponsors etc. 🙂
Hence I need lots of people to watch it and tell him that the documentary is a must! Have you watched it yet Heidi? I know you said you were thinking about it 💚

No, I’ve not watched. I’m not big on documentaries. I’m more of a hunter/gatherer of info…Ahahah

You’re right it is incredibly eye-opening… I think some people might be worried at what they’ll actually find out and then have to deal with 💚

Yeah definitely. But it’s definitely worth watching, it would change their lives and improve their health so much too, it’s so convincing. 🙂

Good luck Zoe, I think men are naturally stubborn to their women telling them what to do. From experience, men are more receptive when they hear advice from what they perceive is an unbiased source, i.e. Their friends. x

I feel like a lot of people are like him. Until something tragic happens that affects you personally, you don’t wake up. Charities and pharma are big business. Time to wake up!

You’re right, people do need to wake up. It’s only now I’m trying to not be so naive. It’s all about the money 😦 💚

Sadly, many people don’t want to change their lifestyles until something bad happens. Try making some delicious vegan dishes for him and don’t tell him they are vegan! That’s an idea.

Thanks for your suggestions and hope you get the time to try out the documentary – ot’s super interesting and great for your health 💚

When a documentary is about health and it makes you not want to eat certain things, surely that can only be a good thing right? 🙂 💚

This sounds like a must-watch! But if Wonderful Husband won’t listen to his wife, I’m not sure a bunch of strangers will convince him. What I’ve learned is that if my husband won’t listen to a suggestion I have, talk to his brother or best friend and have THEM make the suggestion to him. For some reason men will listen to other men…but not their wives.

Oh I hope you do get round to watching it Kate – it’s incredibly interesting. The more people watch it, the more I get to talk about it… I’m full to the brim with wanting to talk about this documentary lol.
I’m surprisingly lucky with my husband, a lot of time he isn’t the most stubborn one in the relationship. I’m genuinely surprised how many people have commented about men being stubborn which wasn’t what I was trying to get at considering women can be incredibly stubborn too haha! But I totally take your point, a whole lot of strangers telling him to might not do it… But I’m still going to give it a try 🙂 💚

I’m not a vegan (and not a good candidate for conversion- sorry!) but I do think my diet tends to be more fruit and vegetable heavy than the “average”. I don’t know about preventing major disease, I guess we’ll see over the course of my life, but I do think I feel better day in and day out when I eat better. If I travel and don’t have as easy access to fresh vegetables I definitely start to feel the desperate need to get them. I have read quite a bit about the dairy industry and how that’s contributed to the idea that we all “need” to drink milk, which is really interesting.. but I also researched that out of self serving-ness, because I hate milk.
As for your husband.. I think you can’t show anybody anything until they are ready for it, as much as we might like to. You can only lead the proverbial horse to water I suppose.

Your comment is super thoughtful, thank you. Also you have nothing to fear, I don’t try and help anyone transition until they ask me to haha 🙂
You’re incredibly honest. I think you’d love the documentary considering what you commented – it’s basically what you said about veg being better for our system and also all the stuff about dairy/meat propaganda (contraversy and all that jazz). Everything normally begins off self-serving but we have to start somewhere.
Again, I really appreciate your super balanced comment. If you do get round to watching it then let me know (even if you think it’s crap) 💚

I haven’t watched the film, but I’m sure it’s edifying. I’m already a firm believer in avoiding packaged and processed meats. I rarely eat meat in general, there are so many great alternatives now and I always feel better when I eat ingredients that come out of the ground. Good luck convincing your husband!

Ah thanks for your mega comment Stephanie! You’re so right about the vast range of alternatives out there and it sounds like you’re already super healthy but you might find the documentary interesting too. Also thank you for the luck with regards to my husband… He seems to slowly be taking an interest in the film so the day may come sooner than we think!

Woah! I totally need to check out this documentary. The thought that a big association that is supposed to push for healthier lifestyles may be influenced with money is scary to me. Sad that it is most likely the case however.

I feel exactly the same Emily… All of these charities and corporations that would trust because we are told to from a young age, but it’s all about money.

I have watched this and I really have been slowly switching over to being vegetarian and eventually vegan. I have been researching a ton! My biggest drawback is that I’m allergic to nuts so I have to find a substitute for that which isn’t always that simple. I have a heart murmur and diabetes runs in my family so I want to on top of my health game.

Ah so happy you watched it! Good to hear you’re changing over considering your genetics… Incredibly wise. Some things we can’t control (genetics) but we can absolutely make the best choices for ourselves otherwise.
The nut thing can be tough but there is such a huge array of products out there to suit both vegetarian and vegan needs – I’m sure you’re going to do great! Feel free to contact me if you need any help with the transition 💚

I will! I have really been pushing myself to make the change and it was going great until my husband decided to go grocery shopping with me.

I have a protest in the next few hours (there is a bull run on my street that a few of us don’t approve of) but tomorrow I’ll check out some more alternatives and send you an email.

Mishelle you are so brave to look for a very natural way to help your body. There is so much media telling us that we must buy medicine (and take it for life!) or we are doomed! But that is definitely not the truth and I would love you to take a look at ‘What The Health’ as it might provide you with some of the answers. Let us know what you thought if you do get round to watching it 💚

I have a ton of alternatives for using eggs in baking (I bake quite a lot). I’ll send you an email now with an attachment that shows all of the appropriate measurements to be equivalent to one egg. Bananas are the best in my opinion 💚

I’ve never seen this documentary! I’ll have to check it out! I’ve already cut out some things, like processed meats… well the heavily processed ones. I’m not sure if basic raw chicken and steaks count as “processed”? I don’t know if I could ever become a vegan, because I don’t like too many veggies :(, but I can definitely improve many areas of my diet! Thanks for the information!
